HALF IRON, OLYMPIC & SPRINT
We invite you to join us March 30th for the third annual event of the Tri Tyler Half. For those of you interested in a little less "fun" that day, we offer an Olympic as well as our new Sprint course. These equally challenging events begin immediately after the start of the Half.
The Half begins with a 1.2 mile swim, starting in waist deep water (wetsuit highly reommended) next to the dam. Buoys placed 100 meters apart with large turn buoys make for a smooth swim leg in calm waters. The cutoff time for the Half is one hour, ten minutes. The Olympic course, 1500 meters, will be to the interior of the Half. The Sprint, 650 meters, will be a friendly swim that travels parallel to the dam. (See swim course for details on water temp & mandatory wetsuit rule).
Our Half bike course is on smooth roads, covering 56 miles of beautiful East Texas countryside. This course is very scenic yet challenging. The first 25 miles are relatively tame. The second half gets into some hills broken up by a reprieve of 4 miles of downhill and tailwind. Feel free to boast of climbing both Killer Hill and Water Tower Hill in a Half-Iron triathlon. Four hand ups of water and gatorade placed evenly on the course, assure you will be hydrated for the run to come. The Olympic course borrows the tail end of the Half course, allowing the experience of Water Tower Hill and Yarborough Lane. There will be two water hand-ups for the Olympic course. The Sprint will follow the Half course for seven miles, turn around for a mostly downhill return.
The run course for the Half and Olympic are out and back on Eastside Rd. The Lake road is mostly shaded, smooth and roller coaster. Don't be surprised to see deer crossing your path. You will have aid stations at every mile marker, filled with water, gels, gatorade, pickle juice, pretzels, bananas, and ice. The Sprint is a closed course mostly flat with one surprise hill at mile two. We'll call that hamburger hill.
We are happy to have John Cobb as our MC for the day (assuming he isnt competing). John is always around for the post race food, drinks & awards provided under the well seated tent. We also have a well staffed medical team ready to help as needed.
There will be finisher t-shirts & finisher medals for those completing the Half. The Olympic & Sprint finishers will receive finisher medals. All participants will recieve a t-shirt at packet pick-up. Awards for Overall, Masters, Grand Masters, Age Groups, Athena, Clydesdale, and Relay Teams will be given at the awards ceremony under the big tent. Cash Awards for the Half totaling $5000.00 (less one penny) will be available to the Pro's and amateurs alike.
Welcome to you 2014 IM Texas folks coming to race our hills. We staged our race date six weeks out from the IM, clearly more difficult than the Woodlands but similar course conditions.
We look forward to seeing you race day! Have a great winter/spring training and don't forget your hill training!
SEE YOU MARCH 30TH!!
